Like Grandma Used to Make by Karen Demsey
Karen was born and raised in California, but has lived in NE Portland for over 30 years. She recently retired from a career in environmental science. In her artwork, she is drawn to people and animals as subjects; these subjects fill her with a feeling of connectedness to other living beings.
This piece was inspired in part by the older women Demsey sees living outside and those she has come to know on her Meals on Wheels route. Food insecurity is only one of many vulnerabilities they face. Certain food dishes bring the artist warm memories of the loved ones who used to cook them for her, and this piece is a wish for nourishment and comfort for those living with hunger and loneliness.
