Loving Your City is an Action by Michelle Bloemers

from $50.00

Michelle Bloemers is a dentist who volunteers weekly at Blanchet with her husband, Jonathan. She and Jonathan moved from Michigan to Oregon in 2016 for school, and fell in love with Portland. They believe that loving your city is a conscious effort, and it's well worth it to give back to the place they call home and all who live there. In her free time, Michelle enjoys drawing, painting, and running with Jonathan and their dog, Elliot.

One of the most memorable experiences Michelle has had volunteering at Blanchet was seeing all of the weathered and tired hands reaching through the food window to take the to-go containers filled with sustenance for the morning. She couldn't help but want to grab the hands and hold them, warm them up from the cold. Because of Covid, we had a panel between us, but she believes that the warm meals passed through the window provided human connection and comfort that was so desired by those visiting Blanchet. She can't help but think that the warm containers of oatmeal and grits were one of the only times during the winter that they had something warm and comforting in their hands.
