Cosmicopia by Amirah Chatman

from $50.00

Amirah Chatman is a Black Queer Artist residing in Portland, Oregon. She is an interdisciplinary artist who holds a Master’s Degree in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her work explores visual ideologies of the afterlife and identity, depicting turbulent otherworldly environments using chalk pastel, felted sculpture and hued light.

Amirah’s piece strives to encapsulate the feelings associated with peace, repose, and abundance. Imagery of swirling clouds (characteristic to her work), are embedded with various fruits, creating a fresh, colorful, and dreamy scene. Her use of clouds and stormy imagery is a metaphor for emotion. In this piece, you can find the duality of feelings associated with the warmth and comfort food has to offer, along with the feelings associated with food insecurity. In the artist’s experience, it's fraught with ups and downs. The lack of gravity and ground in this work serves to showcase those feelings.
