The Recipe by Brooke Bustamante

$50.00

Brooke is a self-taught illustrator who uses art as a means of catharsis. She took up illustrating during therapeutic treatment for complex PTSD. Brooke depicts everyday-objects in her art, to symbolize and visualize the changes in the way she perceives the world around her, and herself. She shares her art because she wants to be seen authentically, while taking up the space needed to heal.

This piece was created while Brooke was processing how it felt to be offered loving gestures, but only as a means to excuse abuse. Each slice of cake came from the same recipe, all cut into the shape of a bargaining chip; a trade off for her values, boundaries, and sense of self. After losing sight of her own identity, illustrating this piece helped her grow back into herself, and into who she is today. She now only accepts sweets from hands that are consistent and kind. Her ultimate comfort food.
