Water Pitcher by John Early
John Early, born in Larchmont, New York (1951) moved to San Francisco and attended California College of the Arts in 1978, earning his BFA in 1981. A class at CCA led to painting his first mural at a state psychiatric hospital in Napa, CA. He also met his future wife, Laura Bender, during this project. After marrying and moving to San Diego, they started their partnership business, SitePainters, producing commissioned art for a widening variety of commercial and residential clients. He and his wife taught art in public schools in the San Diego region as artists in residence. Many residencies concluded with permanent mural projects. The birth of their daughter, Arcadia (1990), motivated their move to Portland (1993). They continued to develop their business with a series of publicly-funded Percent for Art installations. In 2014 John and Laura built an art studio where they have each worked on personal drawings and paintings as well as numerous public art commissions. In 2011 John was diagnosed with Parkinsons which has progressed to the stage where it has forced his retirement. He concluded his career with a soon-to-be published memoir and collection of his poetry and drawing, Eye/I of the Beholder.
