Bryan Aptekar has had a camera in his hand since childhood, but only identified as a photographer much later in life. As a self-declared vagabond who has spent a lifetime seeking new experiences from which to learn, his photography highlights cultures, wildlife, and landscapes from around the world. To make his work – and the world – more accessible for others, his images reflect subjects that can be seen within easy walking distance from whatever form of transport one might have. Based in Portland, Oregon, Aptekar is a primarily self-taught artist who has been developing his skills and sharing his work for the past decade. His work was the subject of a 2014 solo exhibit titled “Edge of the Road Beauty” and has been regularly featured in the City of Portland’s annual “All the Art that Fits” exhibit. He was also fortunate enough to attend an artist residency in Venice, Italy (April 2018).
Home is a complicated concept for him, like many others. It can mean place of origin, community, safety, and well-being. Like family, he sees home as something that one chooses or defines for themselves. It is where one rests one’s head at night, the people one surrounds themselves with, where one drops their boots at the end of the day. As someone who likes nesting, making a space his own, he surrounds himself with things that bring him joy. His piece, Once Upon a Home, is from Garnett Ghost Town in Montana, taken during a photography class where he was learning to see more than the first glance of a place. He thinks home is like that – it can have many levels and take many looks to see the whole picture.
