Elaine connects her love of the environment and nature through her artistic approach to landscapes, nature scenes and birds. Often the paintings provide the viewer a sense of place or insight to a location or thing that they may have experienced themselves. A sense of knowing or belonging to a place play an important role in her pieces and hopes that her artwork demonstrates the respect and passion she has for the natural world.
She enjoys working with pastel, oil and watercolor depicting the natural environment as she experiences and sees it. The value of the painting provides the form and color provides the emotion. Elaine will continue to focus on shapes, values, rhythm, and patterns either intentionally or unintentionally. The painting eventually takes shape, and she often revisits a painting multiple times over a period of weeks before she knows that the work is complete.
Elaine drew inspiration for this year’s show from a road trip to visit family and friends through Northern and Southern California. Because of the vast amount of rain that the regions received this past year, the landscapes and crops were green and lush. In and around the Salinas Valley region, where the region is known for its agriculture, there was an abundance of vegetables, fruit, and nut trees along with vineyards. However, driving through the regions and seeing the vast amounts of migrant workers, reminded Elaine of where and how our food gets to the table. The Migrant Worker painting is her acknowledgement of all the people that work the fields and for the rich agricultural regions that California has to offer.
