Hung is a self-taught artist in his spare time, sketching and doodling since grade school, taking after his mother. Rarely without a sketch pad or his iPad, he enjoys drawing friends and family and capturing memories in art form or recreating pop culture moments with his stylized cartoons. Normally a reserved person, he found expression through art to be the perfect way to form connections with others. Growing up all around the Portland area, he also enjoys basketball, running, supporting his beloved sports teams, and his sneakers.
For his piece, Hung mainly pulled from iconic Portland images when approaching the theme of homegrown and departed from his usual artistic style to a more classic silver age comic style. The main concept he worked with was someone growing crops in their garden, which eventually evolved into a rose garden and, to add a bit of surrealism to it, the city of Portland at the center. While compiling images of iconic buildings in downtown Portland, he came across the seal of Portland bearing the image of Lady Commerce. Hung ultimately decided to use Lady Commerce/Portlandia as a kind of caretaker and nurturer for this little garden of a city and roses. He also opted for a rendering of Mount Hood for the background.
